Placement Testing

Once you register for Orientation, using the online Orientation Reservation system, you will receive an email that includes instructions for how to complete the UMBC placement tests. To ensure that you will be able to successfully register for classes, you must complete these tests by the Saturday BEFORE your advising and registration appointment. For additional information, please refer to the Placement Testing Website or email the Academic Success Center at placement@umbc.edu.

Students can be exempted from Placement Testing ONLY IF they have college credit for a GEP level course in the form of AP, IB, CLEP, or Transfer Credit, and UMBC has the official test score or transcript (with final course grade) on file. Pending scores do not provide an exemption. Please visit the Placement Testing Website to determine if you meet any of the necessary exemption criteria.

Students with documented disabilities who need accommodations for placement testing must register with the Office of Student Disability Services (SDS) at least three weeks BEFORE their scheduled Orientation date. Please visit the SDS website for more information at sds.umbc.edu. Please note that the SDS registration process can take up to two weeks.
