Dawg Days: Service Overnight Program Sample Schedule
An official copy of the schedule will be distributed at check-in with the most up-to-date times and room locations. Check-in will take place at the University Center. Sessions will be hosted in several buildings across campus.
Day 1, Tuesday July 7th
8:30 a.m. Arrival and Continental Breakfast
Check-in at the University Center and grab your materials for the day.
9:00 a.m. Welcome to UMBC! (Students and Families)
Join our staff, and students as we welcome you to the UMBC community.
*Starting at 9:30 a.m., students and families will engage in separate sessions. You will reconnect later in the day. The following sessions are student only:
9:30 a.m. GRIT 101: Navigating Your First Year at an Honors University
Learn tips and tricks from a faculty member on how to access important resources and make connections with your professors.
10:00 a.m. Connect with Your Classmates
Meet you Orientation Peer Ambassador (OPA), UNIV 101 Teaching Assistant (TA) and get to know some of your new classmates!
10:30 a.m. I Am. We Are. I Will
Who are you? How do you want to show up as a new Retriever? How will you join others in co-writing the next chapter of Retriever Nation’s inclusive excellence story? This interactive session will help you discover how to be part of our community of scholars.
11:20 a.m. ENRL 101: Preparing for Advising and Registration
Get ready for your virtual advising and registration appointment. Academic advisors from your college will explain how to build your class schedule and prepare for your advising session.
12:20 p.m. Lunch
Enjoy lunch with your fellow Retrievers in UMBC’s all-you-care-to-eat dining hall!
1:15 p.m. Retriever Card Pick Up
Pick up your official UMBC campus ID card.
1:30 p.m. Be Your Best Self
Join your OPAs and Student Affairs staff for an engaging conversation about community standards, personal well-being, and what it means to care for yourself and others at UMBC.
2:40 p.m. Choose from:
- Welcome Home! Navigating your UMBC Residential Experience – Meet other residential students, learn about living in community, connect with live-in staff, and prepare for move-in day.
- Commuter Life at UMBC: Conquer the Commute, Thrive on Campus! – Learn how to build community, maximize your time on campus, and stay connected as a commuter student.
- Retriever Resource Tour – Take a guided campus tour with your OPA and meet the people and offices that will support your success at UMBC.
3:20 p.m. Thriving as a Retriever
Learn about the services in Academic Transition Programs (ATP), Campus Engagement, and Student Affairs Success Initiatives (SASI) for connection and guidance in becoming a successful student at UMBC, both in and out of the classroom. Lecture Hall 1
4:00 p.m. Retriever Roundup
Pick up your free UMBC t-shirt, visit the Bookstore, reconnect with family and friends, and meet campus resource offices.
4:30 p.m. Check in to Residential Hall and say goodbye to family and guests
Drop your bags in your residence hall room and then meet an Orientation Peer Ambassador (OPA) in the Patapsco Hall Lobby.
5:15 p.m. Residential Life Welcome Session, Dinner, and (seb) Bingo!
Meet with members of Residential Life as we review expectations for your overnight stay and helpful resources while you are here. Enjoy dinner and Bingo with the Student Events Board (seb)! Skylight Room
6:30 p.m. Preparing for Service
Join members from our Shriver Center as you prepared to engage with your service sites. Learn what it means to authentically serve while creating community and connection. Various Locations in The Commons
7:30 p.m. Reconnect, Relax, or Retire
Continue making connections with others in The Commons, or chill out in your room and get rested up for another great day tomorrow!
Day 2, Wednesday July 8th
7:45 a.m. Breakfast in True Grits
Fuel up for a day of service in our dining hall!
8:30 a.m. Depart to Service Sites
UMBC Transit will provide transportation to your non-profit community engaged learning sites.
9:00 a.m. Arrival at Community Engaged Learning Sites
Hear from site program directors about their organization and go through important tips about how to engage in the work they have prepared for you.
12:00 p.m. Lunch and Reflection
Enjoy a catered lunch at your community engaged learning site and reflect on the impact your work has on the non-profit community.
1:15 p.m. Travel Back to Campus
2:00 p.m. Celebration & Closing
Join your family members and celebrating the connections you’ve made through community engaged learning.
3:00 p.m. Residential Hall Checkout & Campus Departure
