Placement Testing

Once you register for Orientation, using the online Orientation Reservation system, you will receive an email that includes instructions for how to complete the UMBC placement tests. The Math Placement Test determines placement into Math courses at UMBC which affects Science course recommendations. All entering students are strongly encouraged to take the online Math Placement Assessment at least one week before their orientation advising session regardless of any potential transfer coursework or AP/IB/CLEP credit. This will allow for a more productive advising session. For additional information, please refer to the Placement Testing Website or submit any questions you have to the Academic Success Center at https://academicsuccess.umbc.edu/placement-testing-help/.

Students can be exempted from Placement Testing ONLY IF they have credit that transfers EXACTLY as the Math course needed for your intended major or as a prerequisite to a Math course needed for your major. If no specific Math course is required for your major, then you may be exempt based on college credit which fulfills the university Math general education requirement (GEP) earned through AP test scores, IB scores, CLEP scores, or transfer credits from an accredited college or university. To ensure a smooth registration process, all transfer credit and test scores MUST be on file before you attend Orientation. If you are unsure, it is better to take the Math Placement Test before your Orientation Advising and Registration Appointment.

Students with documented disabilities who need accommodations for placement testing must register with the Office of Student Disability Services (SDS) at least three weeks BEFORE their scheduled Orientation date. Please visit the SDS website for more information at sds.umbc.edu. Please note that the SDS registration process can take up to two weeks.
